What was a guinea grave? They’re mentioned a time of two in the Tom Harper books. Take a little trip with me to Beckett Street cemetery and I’ll tell you. It’s one of those things that manages to be uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time.

Thanks for that Chris. I spent several hours finding the graves of ancestors, 32 of whom are in Beckett St. I found 2 in guinea graves, to add to the one ( a 3 year old) in Holbeck. In both cemeteries the social gulfs are highlighted by these graves, set against the vast monuments close by.
I understand all too well. I have relatives in Beckett St, St George’s, Hunslet and Harehills. One in a guinea grave here, two in unmarked graves. These say so much about poverty and striving, don’t they?
